Research

Obtaining a thermodynamically accurate phase diagram through numerical calculations is a computationally expensive problem that is crucially important to understanding the complex phenomena of solid state physics, such as superconductivity. Some calculations we accelerated through the use of modern GPUs. We illustrate this with a concrete example of free energy calculation in multi-band iron-based superconductors, known to exhibit a superconducting state with oscillating order parameter. Our approach can also be used for classical BCS-type superconductors. With a customized algorithm and compiler tuning we are able to achieve a 19x speedup compared to the CPU (119x compared to a single CPU core), reducing calculation time from minutes to mere seconds, enabling the analysis of larger systems and the elimination of finite size effects. The effects of a single non-magnetic impurity on superconducting states in the Penson-Kolb-Hubbard model have been analyzed. We analysed both signs of pair hopping, which correspond to s-wave and eta-wave superconductivity. Our results show that an enhancement of the local superconducting gap at the impurity-site occurs for both cases. We obtained that Cooper pairs are scattered (at the impurity site) into the states which are from the neighborhoods of the states, which are commensurate ones with the crystal lattice. Additionally, in the eta-phase there are peaks in the local-energy gap (in momentum space), which are connected with long-range oscillations in the spatial distribution of the energy gap, superconducting order parameter as well as effective pairing potential. Our results can be contrasted with the experiment and predicts how to experimentally differentiate these two different symmetries of superconducting order parameter by scanning tunneling microscopy technique. Iron based superconductors are characterized by the s+/- gap symmetry, where the gap changes its sign between pockets of the Fermi surface. We discuss another sign change mechanism of the superconducting order parameter - the interband Cooper pairs hopping interaction. In the minimal two-orbital model of iron based superconductors we show that this interaction can lead to a change of the sign of the intraband superconducting order parameter regardless of its symmetry. Fe-base superconductors (FeSC) exhibit many characteristic features of systems in which we can expect the existence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. Using a minimal two-band model for FeSC, we conducted a numerical study of FFLO phase in multi-band systems. The static Cooper pair susceptibility suggests that we can expect the system to prefer the state with nonzero Cooper pair momenta (the FFLO phase) regardless of the order parameter symmetry. We investigated the mutual enhancement of magnetism and the FFLO order in CeCoIn5. We demonstrated that under particular conditions magnetic and superconducting orders can cooperate in the sense that the presence of superconductivity can enhance the tendency toward the formation of magnetic order and the presence of magnetic order can enhance the tendency toward the Cooper pair formation. Physical Review B 80, 174525 (2009) We also demonstrated that these two mechanisms (spin density wave and superconductivity) are less destructive upon s-wave superconductivity when they emerge together. It means that under an external magnetic field, superconductivity may coexists with stronger SDW than in the absence of a magnetic field. Physical Review B 84, 094526 (2011)

Moreover we investigated the FFLO phase in a 2D quantum ring. We find non-trivial distribution of superconducting order parameter in this phase: with angular and radial dependent oscillation. Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism 25, 1843 (2012)

Next we studied the influence of diagonal and off-diagonal disorder on the FFLO phase. We demonstarted that the Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase may be unstable against formation of the FFLO phase with a much more complicated spatial profile of the superconducting order parameter. The role of pair hopping interaction was studied. In the case of bipartite square lattice, the system splits into two sublattices, whereas for triangular lattices there are three sublattices. Acta Physica Polonica A 114, 209 (2008) Therefore, in the repulsive Penson-Kolb model the total momentum of electrons forming the Cooper pairs strongly depends on the geometry of the system. Moreover, we find the two kinds of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase originate from the BCS and ETA phase, with different period of modulations.
